Cody

Cody

Cody was born on July 29, 1999. At birth he was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries and had his first open heart surgery at only one month old at BC Children’s Hospital. Complications from that surgery led to 3 more at UCSF before he was 2 years old. Everything was going well until March of 2013 when it was found that he had outgrown his mechanical valve and needed a replacement. March 19, 2013 he was to undergo routine valve replacement when all went wrong. He suffered 4 cardiac arrests, numerous strokes and a massive GI bleed. His heart would not beat on its own and he was implanted with a LVAD (left ventricular assist device). He needed a new heart but was unable to be placed onto the transplant list until significant stroke recovery occurred. After 6 months of intense therapy, on October 11, 2013, he was placed on the transplant list. On July 1, 2016, after a 995 day wait, Cody received his gift of life at St. Paul’s Hospital. Today he continues intense physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. He plans to return to high school this spring. He loves riding his ATV and seadoo as well as spending time with his brother, Tyler.
